How Often Should You Get Your Watch Serviced?

Knowing when to get your watch serviced can be something of an enigma. Most quality watch movements can keep running for years without being touched, and on top of that, different types of watch movements have different service intervals.

As Farer only use mechanical movements, it is these that we’ll focus on in this article.

For those readers who are unfamiliar with mechanical watch movements, they use the energy released from a wound steel mainspring that is then regulated by a series of gears and an oscillating balance wheel to turn the hands.

These small machines contain a lot of moving parts; therefore, as with any machine, watch movements require regular maintenance. Even if you wear a watch infrequently, that does not necessarily mean that you should leave a longer period between services. This is because a key part of servicing a watch is the relubrication of the various movement parts, such as jewels and gears. Over time, the lubricating oils will dry up, creating more friction between the various moving parts. In the long term, this will result in more wear and tear on the movement and could cause serious issues down the line.

For these reasons, Farer recommends servicing your watches every 4 years. However, should you notice any changes in your watch’s function before this, then you should contact the manufacturer or your watchmaker. Such things might include, but are not limited to, any unusual sounds, significant changes in the resistance you feel when winding the crown, or moisture under the crystal.

You can contact Farer regarding any servicing and maintenance requirements you have for our watches through the Servicing & Repair contact form. Alternatively, you can use a reputable watch technician who has experience with ETA, La Joux-Perret, or Sellita movements. However, servicing and repair by a third party will invalidate your warranty.
