INSTRUMENTS FOR FLIGHT

To be fit for purpose, there are two features that are critical for pilots watches. They are accuracy and legibility. The Farer Pilot collection delivers on both of these requirements in spades. Each watch has a utilitarian dial with large, easy-to-read luminous markers, whilst the movement is protected by a soft-iron Faraday cage. This conducts magnetic interference away from the movement, ensuring reliable timekeeping. These are watches built for modern explorers, above the clouds or on the ground.

HIGH LEGIBILITY

HIGH LEGIBILITY

Each dial design is reflective of the heritage of professional pilots watches. This means that legibility is at the core of each dial, with clean, simple aesthetics and a controlled use of colour. The markers are large and oversized, and the handset is the classic alpha style that’s been used on aviation watches for decades. Furthermore, the 39mm case has vertical sides and a thin bezel, which allows for a large 37mm dial without requiring an overly large and cumbersome case.

SUPER-LUMINOVA

SUPER-LUMINOVA

In tandem with the legible designs of each pilots watch dial, visibility in the dark is another key requirement of a good aviation watch. This is why Farer have utilised premium Grade A Super-LumiNova pigments on the hands and markers, along with solid Lumicast numerals on select models. The legibility is further boosted with the application of anti-reflective treatment inside and out of the domed sapphire crystal, meaning nothing is reflected back into the dial for blurred readings.

Farer has done what they do best with the new Pilot; by that, I mean taking an archetypal watch design, keep the essence of what makes it work... and give it their own distinct twist.

FARADAY CAGE

FARADAY CAGE

Pilot’s watches were born from function. A cockpit is one of the most magnetic environments a watch will encounter and can have detrimental effects on a watch - slowing, speeding or even stopping a movement. The Swiss Made Sellita SW200-1 movement inside each pilot watch is protected by an internal soft-iron Faraday cage. This protects the movement from magnetic fields of up to 500 Gauss, over eight times more than is required by the ISO 764 Certification that allows a watch to be described as “magnetic-resistant”. The screw-down case back has been finished in highly polished steel with the Farer anti-magnetic marque showing the protection of the Faraday cage within.
