LEAPING SALMON

The moon phase of the Eddington uses a disc that’s assiduously handpainted in Switzerland. Against the midnight blue sky is a lumed white moon that glows strongly in the dark. Making the perfect pairing to the white moon are hour markers made from pure white Super-LumiNova. These alternate between batons and Roman numerals and as they’re applied to the dial they give the design a nice touch of depth. These are accompanied by a polished lance handset and a seconds hand with a blue Farer A at its tip. All of which is set on a pink copper dial that has a discreet brushed finish.

Features

Lunar Orbit - Each moonphase disc is hand-painted in Geneva, Switzerland and features a textured moon set against a starry sky. What’s more, the moons themselves are painted using Super-LumiNova so that they glow brightly in the dark.

Curvaceous Comfort - The cushion case sits comfortably on any wrist, with a thickness of only 10.5mm and a compact lug-to-lug of 43.8mm.

Manual Drive - The watches in the Moonphase collection are powered by Swiss hand-wound mechanical movements with custom decoration, which can be viewed through a sapphire case back.

STORY

This model is named after Sir Arthur Eddington, who was an English astronomer, physicist, and mathematician. He is notable for being the first to correctly theorize that stars produced their energy through the fusion of hydrogen into helium. In addition to this, Eddington wrote several articles announcing and explaining Einstein's theory of general relativity to the English-speaking world during the First World War. As one of the few mathematicians skilled enough to understand general relativity, he proved adept at explaining the theory in both lay and scientific terms.

Furthermore, his observations of the solar eclipse in May 1919 provided one of the earliest confirmations of general relativity. The Eddington limit, which is the maximum luminosity a body (such as a star) can achieve when there is a balance between the force of radiation acting outward and the gravitational force acting inward, is named after him. Appropriately, Eddington also has a lunar impact crater on the Moon named in his honour.

The Farer design team definitely aced their exams in school because these watches just have amazing proportions and great colours, and always bring something new to the table.→

When I find out one of the most design-conscious British brands is tackling this most traditional complication, my curiosity is piqued.→

The Moonphase collection features a big personality within a trim 38.5mm case that’s not shy on details itself, but the star of the show is undoubtedly the enormous moon depicted within the aperture that dominates the top half of the dial.→
