BLUE SKIES

The Curtis uses texture and colour to create a distinctive twist on the iconic pilot watch. The blue-grey guilloche dial is divided into twelve pieces, and each duodecimal segment is slightly concave. This means that as the light catches each segment differently, two parts light up at once. The lit segments rotate as the watch is moved, and the resulting effect is reminiscent of a moving propeller, an apt image for a pilot watch.

The applied 3D hour markers are in a classic aviation layout, with the numerals punctuated by an arrow at twelve, and batons at three, six, and nine. They’re made from Lumicast, a blend of ceramic and X2 Super-LumiNova to ensure a bright glow in low lighting. The lozenge-shaped handset is filled with pale yellow Super-LumiNova, and matches the Farer ‘A’ at the tip of the seconds hand, and the five-minute marks along the raised minute track. The Farer 'A' beneath twelve o'clock is applied, and the lettering "Farer" and "Universal" is raised slightly proud of the dial so that it is crisp and legible.

All of which is housed within a 40mm titanium case that has been given a blue PVD coating to match the dial.

FEATURES

Light Show - The Curtis is a striking sight in the dark thanks to Lumicast markers and hands using the newest Grade X2 Super-LumiNova.

Flight Case - The watch has a versatile 40mm titanium case with short lugs and a height of just 10.9mm, so it’s a great fit on the wrist. The case of the Curtis has been given a navy blue PVD coating to match the dial. As the case is made from titanium, the watch is 25g lighter than the Pilot Series I.

Faraday CageThanks to our inner soft-iron Faraday cage, the watch is protected from any potentially harmful magnetic fields up to 500 Gauss. This is over eight times the standard level of anti-magnetic protection required to comply with ISO 764 certification for anti-magnetic watches.

Swiss Precision - The watch is powered by the robust Swiss Made Sellita SW300-1 automatic calibre. A real pillar of Swiss movements, renowned for its accuracy, dependability and longevity.

STORY

The Curtis is named after Eleanor Lettice Curtis, who was an English aviator, flight test engineer, air racing pilot, and sportswoman. Born in 1915, Curtis learned to fly in 1937, and in July 1940, she was one of the first female pilots to join the British Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA).

The ATA were responsible for delivering aircraft from the factories to the RAF airfields for service, and as the war progressed, Curtis became qualified to fly all types of aircraft. She was the first woman pilot to deliver an Avro Lancaster bomber and also flew 222 Handley Page Halifaxes and 109 Short Stirlings.

After the war, Curtis worked as a technician and flight test observer at the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment before joining Fairey Aviation as a senior flight development engineer. Later, she would go on to work for the Ministry of Aviation and the Civil Aviation Authority.

She was also actively engaged in British air racing and was a founding member of the British Women’s Pilots’ Association. In 1992, she qualified to fly helicopters and continued to fly aircraft until choosing to “ground” herself in 1995, at the age of 80.
